Program Description:

Located approximately forty-five minutes from Birmingham and Manchester and two hours from London by rail, Keele University is the UK''s largest integrated campus university, and boasts a population of about 7,000 students.

Bowling Green State University maintains a dual relationship with Keele University including an exchange program open to all majors as well as the semester abroad in England specifically for Education majors.

Every spring semester, 15 BGSU Education majors study abroad at Keele University under the direction of a BGSU faculty member. Students receive credit for specific education courses at BGSU. Tuition is paid to BGSU while housing costs are paid upon arrival at Keele. The program director for the BGSU Education program at Keele University is BGSU faculty members Trinka Messenheimer.

Keele is in North Staffordshire halfway between Manchester and Birmingham. The University is on a hill overlooking the town of Newcastle-under-Lyme (two miles from Keele) with Stoke-on-Trent (and its main shopping area Hanley) just a couple of miles further.

There is a thriving student life around the campus and a wide range of café-bars, restaurants and pubs in Newcastle and clubs in Hanley.

Theatre lovers will enjoy the New Vic in Newcastle and the Regent in Hanley, while the latest films are shown at the multi-screen cinema in Newcastle. The UK’s biggest theme park, Alton Towers, is around 45 minutes from the University.

Keele’s central location means it is easy to get anywhere in the country, with the M6 and rail links close at hand. Manchester and Birmingham are each an hour’s drive away, while London is less than two hours by train.

Learn about your destination by visiting the State Department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs web page at to find country specific information about visa, safety and security, local laws, health, and more.

All courses are taught in English.

Students interested in study abroad at Keele University should have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA.  The 16 credits taken as a part of the Keele study abroad program will transfer completely to the BGSU program of study.  Among these courses that are usually available as part of the Keele semester are:

• Professional Education Courses such as EDIS 2310, EIEC 2110, EDFI 4080, EDAS 4090
• General Education Courses to fulfill arts and humanities (literature and history), math or science and electives

Study abroad students’ accommodations are individual rooms within the university’s residence halls.  Students’ rooms, with or without washbasins, do have a shared kitchen and bathroom facilities. Housing fees are paid upon arrival. For additional housing information including types, fees and deadlines and more click HERE

This program includes one month of spring break when students are encouraged to travel together around the United Kingdom and throughout Europe to experience added social and cultural aspects of this special opportunity. These travel costs are in addition to the tuition and housing fees.

Because this exchange program is part of Bowling Green State University study abroad options, financial aid that could be applied to study on BGSU’s main campus can usually be applied equally to study in the program abroad. If contacting via email please include your name and ID number along with the program name and semester you are planning to study abroad.  For appointments, please also include several days and times that work for you.

To determine eligibility for Financial Aid, please contact:

In addition to financial aid, there are International Travel Grants and general Education Abroad scholarship opportunities that are available for students on the Education Abroad WEBSITE.
